History of the Fire Department

The only mention of early fire fighting was found in the May 20, 1882 issue if the Jasper County News….”Citizens Hook and Ladder Co. meets first Monday. T.R. Penn, Foreman, S.C.  Charping 1st Asst, Jno H. Kelly 2nd Asst, A.T. Gray, Sec., W.L. Lane, Treas, V.A. Chaffin, Engineer.”  (taken from History of Jasper County, Georgia)

Like many small towns, the history of the volunteer fire department was very limited.  It has been recorded that when the alarm sounded citizens turned out to do anything that was needed.  Then, in 1979 men around the town organized and formed a Volunteer Fire Department.  They attended the State Fire Academy and became certified Firefighters, Four of the original Firefighters are still active, Assistant Chief Theron Edwards, Lt. Cal McElheney, Lt. Bill Slocumb and FF Ed Burrell.
